What affects the cost of insulation in East Texas?
How the insulation types compare, what pushes the price up or down, and how to get a written price for your home.

How the options stack up
No two houses are the same, so we only price a job in writing after a free inspection. The table below shows how the main options compare with each other for the same area, from the least expensive to the most.
| Insulation type | Relative cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Radiant barrier | Lower | Sunny roofs over attics that already have good insulation |
| Blown in fiberglass or cellulose | Lower | Adding depth to an existing attic |
| Batts | Lower to moderate | Open walls, new builds, floors over dry crawl spaces |
| Open cell spray foam | Moderate to higher | Attic roof decks, interior walls |
| Closed cell spray foam | Highest | Damp crawl spaces, rim joists, metal buildings |
| Removal | Varies by attic or crawl space | Damp, moldy or rodent damaged insulation |
Spray foam is sold by the board foot, which equals one square foot of foam one inch thick. Two inches of foam across 150 square feet comes to 300 board feet.
Six factors behind every quote
Area
The square footage of the attic floor, roof deck, walls or crawl space sets the baseline.
Material
Blown in fiberglass sits at the low end. Closed cell foam sits at the high end.
Thickness
More inches means more material. We size it to the R-value your space needs.
Moisture repairs
Damp or moldy insulation has to come out first, and the cause has to be fixed.
Access
Low crawl spaces, tight attics and steep roofs slow the work down.
Prep and sealing
Air sealing, baffles, floor supports and covering belongings are part of doing it right.
How much insulation do you need?
Smith and Gregg counties fall in climate zone 3. For this zone, ENERGY STAR recommends:
- Attic with no insulation: R-49
- Attic with 3 to 4 inches already: add R-38
- Floors over unconditioned space, such as a crawl space: R-19
Most homes we see around Tyler and Longview land somewhere between those numbers, so measuring your attic tells you far more than any average. Read how much attic insulation an East Texas home needs.
Will it pay off?
It depends on where you are starting, where your ducts run and how you use the house. An attic with a few inches of flattened, decades old fiberglass has much more to gain than one that is already close to the recommended depth. In a humid area, fixing air leaks and moisture problems can matter as much as adding R-value. We will tell you plainly which upgrades make sense for your house and which ones do not.

Cost questions
Is spray foam worth paying more for?
- Often yes for attics with ducts, damp crawl spaces, drafty older homes and metal buildings.
- For a simple top up in a dry attic, blown in is usually the better value.
Does crawl space work cost more?
- It often takes longer because the space is low and tight.
- Whether it needs foam or batts depends on how damp it is underneath.
Is the estimate free?
- Yes. The inspection and written estimate come at no cost and with no obligation.
Are rebates or tax credits available?
- Programs change often.
- Check your electric provider’s current efficiency programs and current federal tax guidance before you buy.
Why are quotes so different?
- Usually the depth, material or prep work differs.
- Compare what each quote includes, not only the total.
