Radiant barrier installation in East Texas

Reflective foil under the rafters that turns back roof heat. Best on sunny roofs, and we will tell you honestly if shade makes it less worthwhile.

Radiant barrier foil under attic rafters

Reflect roof heat before it settles into the attic

When the afternoon sun hits your shingles, the roof deck heats up and radiates that heat downward onto the attic floor and any ductwork up there. Insulation slows heat once it arrives. A radiant barrier steps in sooner. It is a foil layer under the rafters that reflects much of that radiant heat back toward the roof.

How much it helps depends a lot on your lot. A house sitting in full sun with ducts in the attic can see a real drop in attic temperature. A house tucked under tall pines and oaks, which describes plenty of homes in Tyler, Whitehouse and Bullard, gets less direct sun on the roof, so a radiant barrier adds less. We will tell you which group you fall in.

A radiant barrier does not replace insulation, and it does nothing for humidity or air leaks. It works best on top of a properly insulated attic floor, and we often do both in one trip.

  • Foil radiant barrier stapled to the underside of the rafters
  • Air space toward the roof, which the foil needs to reflect
  • Soffit and ridge vents kept open so the attic can breathe
  • Blown in top up in the same visit if needed
  • Free inspection and a written price before any work begins
Is it worth it?

When a radiant barrier is a good fit, and when it is not

Roof in full sun

Open lots and newer subdivisions with few mature trees see the biggest benefit.

Ducts in the attic

Ductwork under a hot, radiating roof gains the most from a cooler attic.

Less help under heavy shade

If tall pines shade your roof most of the day, the payoff is smaller.

Skip it with roof deck foam

If the roof deck gets spray foam, a radiant barrier there adds little.

How it works

Most installs take one day

01

Inspect

We check shade, ventilation, access and your current insulation depth.

02

Written estimate

Barrier and any top up, priced together.

03

Install

Foil goes up on the rafters with vent paths left clear.

04

Top up and clean

Insulation is added if needed, then the attic is cleaned up.

What a radiant barrier costs

Attic size and how easily we can reach the rafters set most of the price. Low pitch roofs and crowded attics take longer. Pairing it with a blown in top up in the same visit usually costs less than two separate trips.

Radiant barrier questions

My house is shaded by pines. Do I need one?
  • Probably less than a house in full sun.
  • Your money may go further on attic depth or air sealing. We will look and tell you.
Is it a replacement for insulation?
  • No. It reflects radiant heat. Insulation slows heat that moves through it. Most attics need both.
Will it help with humidity?
  • No. It does not seal air leaks or block moisture. Air sealing and spray foam handle that.
Can foil be laid over my insulation?
  • We advise against it. Dust and pollen settle on flat foil and it stops reflecting. It belongs on the rafters.
Does it help in winter?
  • Only slightly. It is mostly a summer upgrade.
